EDMONDS, Hugh (1901)
Overview
Chryston born in 1884, Joined Accies from Ashfield Juniors. Played as a guest on two occasions for Celtic, on 28th April 1902 against Everton and two days later when Sunderland were the opposition. He was Accies keeper when the Second Division title was assured in a win at Shawfield on 6th February 1904.
His move from Hamilton took him to Belfast Distillery in 1907 after being the first goalkeeper to appear in 100 league matches for Accies. His next move came when he signed for Linfield and it was while there in October 1909, he went to Bolton Wanderers. While in their reserve side in February 1911 he was taken to Manchester United to replace the regular keeper, Harry Moger, who had been injured. By appearing in the final 13 games, Hugh collected a Championship medal with his new club. The following season saw him retain his place before an offer was made to him to return to Ireland as Glenavon’s player /manager and this he accepted. His last known club was the Distillery side whom he returned to in May 1913.
He was a great favourite while at Douglas Park where he gave confidence to those around him by his clean handling and general play. While with Accies he won a Lanarkshire Cup Winners medal in 1902, 1905 and 1906 and was on the losing side in the finals of 1903 and 1904, possibly a record, appearing in five consecutive finals.
In height he measured 5’10” and weighed 12sts.
Debut on 14th September 1901 away to Abercorn in a Second Division League game.
