DONNACHIE, Sandy (1920)

Overview

Played against Accies in a Lanarkshire Select in Sandy Purdie’s Benefit Match in September 1920 and so impressed the Douglas Park officials that they signed him despite fierce competition. He was an outside right with his former club, Royal Albert, but while with Accies he was played at inside forward or centre forward.

His career at Hamilton lasted all of a year. He then went to the juniors with Burnbank Athletic where he rediscovered his goal scoring abilities and Carlisle United signed him, this being in 1923. He certainly wasn’t a failure while at Douglas Park, though four of his goals came in an away match at Albion Rovers which Accies won 4-3.

He also appeared for St Bernard’s and while there he was a prolific scorer. Clydebank also made use of his services. A Burnbank lad, in 1928 he was back with Burnbank Athletic and was chosen to play for Lanarkshire against Dunbartonshire on February 18th when he scored on a 4-1 defeat. In the Scottish Junior Cup Final that year he scored both Burnbank’s goals in a 6-2 defeat by Maryhill Hibs at Firhill. He was trainer to the Athletic in the 1933.

Debut 20th November 1920 away to Rangers in a 4-0 defeat.
