GILLESPIE, Tom (1923)

Overview

Signed from Queen of the South during the 1923 close season, an outside right. He was back with the Dumfries side in August 1924. In November he was signed by Preston North End at the age of 24.

He was one of a number of Scots who went to America between 1921 and 1932 to play in the newly founded Soccer League, he was attached to a club by the name of Bethlehem Steel. It was alleged that the players could earn three times the wages there compared to Scotland.

He also appeared with Newark Americans prior to returning to Britain in 1931 and turned out once again for the Deepdale club.

Tom was born in Girvan on 28th February 1901.

Debut on 14th August 1923 in a Lanarkshire Cup tie at home to Hamilton Garrison during which he scored in a 7-0 win.
