Accies Career

Overview

A former Scotland Amateur and Youth cap, he also played for the British Olympic team. George was a centre half most of the time, but could perform more than adequately at wing half as well. He had given service to St Mirren and Partick Thistle, with whom he gained his six caps as an amateur in season 1967-68, before settling in at Douglas Park in 1970.

Despite a poor season for the club, he was part of a good half back formation with Jim Dempsey and Gordon Hamilton. He left Accies surprisingly after a season in which he only missed one game and that was due to taking a party of his school pupils abroad; he was a geography teacher.

He then signed up as Player/Coach with Carluke Rovers. He next took up refereeing and went on to become the chief SFA referee co-ordinator.

He had gone to Firhill from Dalziel High School and while at school he also played for Motherwell Bridge Works. He was deputy head at Lesmahagow Higher Grade prior to becoming The SFA’s Referee Training Officer in January 1988. He later joined FIFA as a referee supervisor. He spent two years from 2008 in Kuala Lumpur with the Asian Football Federation where he led their innovative Project Future which put young referees through a thorough two year programme with the aim of producing officials for such as World Cup and Asian tournaments. In 2010, he was living in Hamilton.

Debut in a Scottish League Cup tie on 8th August 1970 at home to Stranraer which was lost 3-2.
