CHAMBERS, Hugh (1929)

Overview

From the time when he was given the chance to play in the first team in 1929 he retained his place until the end of the season. All of his appearances were at left half other than his last when he was played at centre half in an experimental eleven which defeated Clyde 3-2 at Shawfield. When the new season came he had gone from Douglas Park.

Prior to his move to Hamilton he had been with firstly Clyde, where he played as an inside forward and then he joined Cowdenbeath in June 1924 and there he remained until he lost his place following a training dispute, and it was from there that he moved to Lanarkshire. On his debut he looked good though slowed later due to his lack of match fitness. While in Fife he was known as “Porky”.

On 16th August 1924 Cowdenbeath met Heart of Midlothian at Central Park in front of almost 18,000 fans in their first ever Scottish League Division One fixture which ended in a 2-1 away win. When the Central Park side finished fifth in the First Division, their best ever placing, Hugh was their left half that term, 1924-25. Prior to his move to Clyde he had been with St Anthony’s.

Debut on 26th January 1929 in a Scottish League match away to Kilmarnock.
