Overview

The 14th of October 1905 was Benny’s date of birth which took place at Nigg in Kincardineshire. His career commenced with Kittybrewster FC in Aberdeen, then a spell in Boys Brigade football following which he was able to join Aberdeen Muggiemoss, being there for only three months until he signed by Aberdeen in 1927.

Four years later he appeared at the highest level when he played against Ireland. He was a very nimble and skilful individual who was sharp in front of goal as his 38 goals in 38 League matches for the Dons during season 1929-30 demonstrates, a record for the club.

By 1932 he was in English football with Sunderland who had paid out £2,000. Just a little more than two years on Middlesbrough had spent £1,250 for him and he remained there until the war started in 1939.

Like many others in Scotland and England the war years gave rise to many guests being used and Benny was no different, among the club colours he graced at that time were Aldershot, Brentford, Reading, West Ham United, Lincoln City, Dundee United and of course Accies. When at Douglas Park he was close to forty. Before peace time came he retired. His nephew, Harry also played for Aberdeen and Scotland in the 1950’s. Benny’s death was recorded in 1977.

He was an inside or centre forward who was only 5’5” in height and weighed a stocky 10sts 11lbs.

Debut on 13th February 1943 in a Southern League match at home to Third Lanark in which he scored twice.
