Accies Career
Overview
As a schoolboy he played for Hawkshill School and Lornshill Academy. A former Scotland player, Joe had played at the top level with Partick Thistle, Celtic and Blackburn Rovers before he came to Accies to take over the role which Bobby Graham had had prior to his retirement following an knee injury. Joe arrived at Hamilton at the end of season 1980-81.
One of the reasons for his move to Douglas Park was because of his links with Davie McParland. A striker, he had one particular claim to fame in that with his first touch of the ball when he came on as a substitute for his country against Sweden at Hampden in 1977 he scored a goal. Like Bobby Graham, he too had to retire due to a knee injury.
He had a spell as Manager at Cowdenbeath on leaving Douglas Park and was also with Airdrieonians later, as Coach. His experience was invaluable to the young players around while with Accies. Altogether spent twelve years in the top flight from the time Partick Thistle signed him from Sauchie Juniors in 1972. He was back in management in 1987 with Armadale Thistle. His son, Steven, played for Motherwell, Aberdeen and in 2005-06, Dundee then Livingston and Ross County.
Joe was born in Bridge of Allan on 14th May 1954.
Debut on 14th March 1981 in a Scottish League match at Falkirk which Accies lost 2-1.
