Accies Career

Overview

Discovered by Ardrossan Winton Rovers while a right winger with amateur club, Largs Rovers. He moved into senior circles when Hibs signed him in 1954 and was converted to play on the other side of the field. A move to the west for a transfer fee of £3,000 took him to St Mirren where he remained until January 1961 when he was tempted south by Sheffield Wednesday. Nine months later he was turning out for Tranmere Rovers.

He came to Hamilton in 1963 from Queen of the South and he was a member of the Douglas Park team which was promoted in 1965. In his three year stint with Accies his craft and experience helped to mould a young Accies side. He also turned out at right back a couple of times. When he was freed from Douglas Park he continued playing at Stranraer until 1967.

His son, Derek, went on to become one of the leading marksmen in the Scottish League, fifteen or so years later.

Johnny was born in Ardrossan on 27th July 1933. His death, after a long illness, was noted in the Evening News on 24th March 2005.

Debut on 21st August 1963 in a Scottish League match at home to Clyde which Accies lost 3-2.
