DOUGAN, Tommy (1944)

Overview

Holytown was Tommy’s place of birth in 1918. As a 17 year old he was discovered by Plymouth Argyle while with Tunbridge Wells Rangers in December 1936. In the English Second Division he proved a valuable asset to them in his first season. His apprenticeship over he was transferred to Manchester United for £4000 in March 1939.

Six months later war was declared and he returned to Scotland to assist Heart of Midlothian initially followed by Dunfermline Athletic. While with the Tynecastle club in 1941, he was one of their star players in the run to the Final of the Summer League Cup, which they lost to Rangers after a replay.

It was in 1944 that he turned out for Hamilton and was fairly regular on the right wing. For a winger he had a good scoring ratio. Kilmarnock had him for 5 matches from February 1946 until he moved back to Dunfermline Athletic the following month.

Below average height at 5’6” and only 9sts 10lbs.

Debut on 1st January 1944 in a Southern League match at Motherwell.
