FERGUSON, Charlie (1941)

Overview

Signed from Aberdeen in December 1941 when both Jimmy Morgan and Johnny Campbell were only available if their leaves permitted, so Charlie played in goal on only one occasion. Born in Dunfermline on 22nd October 1910 he was signed by Middlesbrough from Benburb in May 1932. His next club was Notts County before returning north to join Aberdeen.

The war over he was manager of Gateshead, from April 1960 until 1961, and North Shields, then began a scouting career with first Burnley then Sheffield United. It was at Sunderland that he was best known in his new capacity, he was responsible for bringing nine of the side which won the FA Cup in 1973, to Roker Park. He was behind the signing of Ally McCoist for the club and also tried to get Bobby Charlton and later Kevin Keegan to join Sunderland. There he spent 25 years and was fondly remembered by all who knew him. His death took place in North Shields on 16th April 1995.

Debut on 1st November 1941 away to Dumbarton in a Southern League match.
