SPEIRS, John (1910)
Overview
A speedy winger who hailed from Stevenson in Ayrshire and was signed from Port Glasgow Athletic along with other two team mates, goalkeeper, Montgomery and right back, Jackson.
It was one of his goals which earned Accies a draw in the Lanarkshire Cup Final at Fir Park versus Wishaw Thistle in August 1910, the replay was also drawn and the cup was presented as a joint award, therefore he was able to collect a winners medal as he appeared in both matches. He held on to the position until John H. McLaughlin came back on the scene at Douglas Park.
In September 1911 he was playing at centre forward for Abercorn, scoring on his debut. He later played for them at centre half and also captained the side when they won the Scottish Qualifying Cup in defeating Arbroath 4-1 at Cathkin in 1914 after two drawn matches. His brother, Bob was a prolific scorer for the “Abbies” as well following his move from Morton. In 1918, John was reported missing, presumed dead during the war.
Debut on 26th February 1910 in a Scottish League match at home to Airdrieonians.
