A schoolboy cap, played as a junior with Bonnyrigg Rose Athletic and while with the New Dundas Park club he was also capped, and he was still only 16.

In October 1963 he joined Hearts and a year later made his first team debut against Hibs in a Summer Cup match. Dunfermline Athletic next paid his wages from 1966, and in 1969 he went to Dumbarton. He had also been with Berwick Rangers prior to signing for Accies. He did so following a friendly against Rangers Reserves.
