Overview

Another war time debutante in 1943, he was with Newcastle United. Born at Rochford, near Southend on 29th April 1917, his career as a senior commenced with Chelmsford City in 1935 before joining Southend in July of the next year. For a sum of £3,250 he was then transferred to St James’ Park. He received an England cap against Norway in a match at Newcastle on November 9th 1938. He was a left half and appeared as a guest with Southend United and Swansea Town before coming to Douglas Park at the beginning of season 1943-44.

He resumed his career at Newcastle until he was transferred to Lincoln City in December 1948 and there he remained until 1954 during which time he made 233 appearances for them, and while there he captained them to promotion in 1952 as Division Three (North) Champions, the December of that year saw him with Blyth Spartans as player cum trainer, then player/manager at the end of the season. Finally he was their club secretary from May 1957 until November 1960.

He served with the Tyneside Scottish Black Watch. Mentioned in dispatches, he was a sergeant. He was employed in Blyth Power Station for almost 25 years before retiring, His death took place on 28th December 1992. Duggie’s brother, Bill, captained Reading. The son of Jocky Wright.

Debut on 21st August 1943 in a Southern League match away to Partick Thistle.
