Overview

One of Accies pre-war heroes, Peter was reputed to be a goalie of class. He was actually a local, being Hamilton born. Said to have been on Newcastle United’s books as an amateur.

Lanarkshire born, in Wishaw on 18th November 1905 he was a junior with Pollock and St Roch’s prior to going to Celtic Park in 1924 for a fee of £120. His Parkhead career saw him through over a century of League and Scottish Cup appearances after a shaky start.

In July 1927 he signed for South Shields and then moved on to Nelson where he spent two years before being freed in March 1931. An opportunity arose to take over as player/manager in Dublin with Shelbourne and Peter accepted six months after moving there to play.

His return to Scotland came in April 1933 when he was signed by Accies where he spent an eventful two seasons, during which time he reappeared as a guest for Celtic. He also appeared as a member of the Hamilton side which annexed the Second Eleven Cup in April 1934. An injury kept him out of the Hamilton side which reached the 1935 Cup Final, though Peter was no stranger to a Scottish Cup Final having picked up a winners medal in 1925 and a runner up medal the following season.

He left Douglas Park with a free transfer in May 1935 and he joined Albion Rovers, where he was appointed as team captain. When the Midlands was blitzed in the Spring of 1941 he was badly injured and spent until the end of the year in hospital. He died in Manchester on October 10th 1948.

When playing his details were reported as, height 5’7”, weight 11sts 12lbs.
