Overview

Here we have a performer who was a dashing winger and had been with East Fife before the Second World War. While there he was described as follows ‘As tricky as they make ‘em, and a special favourite with the crowd. He has two clever feet, and a head that enables him to quickly make up his mind on the run, whether to swerve right or left, when about to be tackled. Evades contact when there is another way around, and interchanges freely with his partner which helps to provide real entertainment for the crowd”. He was East Fife’s leading league scorer with 21 goals in season 1939-40.

Hibernian welcomed him into their side for the start of the 1940-41 campaign in the newly formed Southern League. Tommy spent the last few weeks of the 1941-42 season at Douglas Park and added greatly to the entertainment value in a crisis time as far as the general public were concerned due to the war.

1942-43 saw him with Morton. On returning to the Fifers he scored for them in the Final of the League Cup on 1st November 1947 after a replay against Falkirk at Hampden with 31,000 present in a 4-1 win. Glasgow born, a product of Hamiltonhill Social, a juvenile club, and Neilston Victoria before going to Bayview where he won a Scottish Cup Winners medal in 1938 as a member of the only Second Division club ever to win the Scottish Cup.

During season 1948-49 he was on Forfar Athletic’s books. An electrician to trade. He was 5’6” and weighed 10sts 7lbs.
