Overview
Played for Scotland as a schoolboy, while a pupil at Larkhall Academy. Joined Rangers in 1981 aged sixteen and much was expected of him. He was sent to Cambuslang Rangers to gain experience. His early promise never quite materialised and despite being a big favourite with the Ibrox faithful he was allowed to leave on various loan agreements, first to Leeds United and then in 1987 he came to Accies, appearing in five matches in the Premier League before returning to Edmiston Drive.
He was also capped by the Scottish Under 21 selectors as well as being a member of the Rangers side which won the League Cup in season 1983-84. He was then transferred to Hearts in July 1987 for a reported fee of £175,000. A year later and for a much lower sum he went to Dunfermline Athletic. He then went to Fulham on loan for a short time.
Accies then brought him back to Douglas Park as a permanent signing at the start of the 1990-91 term, with a view to using his experience and commitment to get the club back to the top league. It never quite worked out and "Shuggie" was on the move again, this time to Kilmarnock.
He was also with Ayr United and Dumbarton before finding a place in Larkhall Thistle's side. In September 1997 he switched to Benburb where he was appointed as Manager a year later.
As a player he weighed in at 12sts and was 6’ in height. Born in Lanark on 13th December 1965.
Debut on 28th March 1987 in a Premier League match at home to Celtic which was lost 3-2.
