Overview

A centre or inside forward who had been at Dumbarton before coming to Hamilton in October 1919. Though originally from Fife, he was a resident of Coatbridge. His Accies appearances were few.

While with Dumbarton he became the first Sons player to be the leading league goalscorer in four successive seasons. It seems his father was not in favour of him playing football and he was regularly listed as J.G.Robertson as a result. Dumbarton were Second Division Champions and he collected the appropriate medal. In addition they were runners up in the Consolation Cup when he scored against St Johnstone in a 2-1 defeat in the final at Ibrox in front of an attendance of 8000. The following season 1911-12 once again John played in a final, this time it was the Scottish Qualifying Cup when a Gibson goal for Dunfermline Athletic at The Gymnasium, St Bernards ground, before 10,500, took the honours.

He was injured during the war when he was the first Dumbarton player to enlist. Awarded the Military Medal.

Debut on 1st November 1919 in a match in the Scottish League at home to Falkirk.
