Overview
A player who had been on the books of Tottenham Hotspur. He played at centre half for Accies. It was reported that he had a quiet, but effective game.
Bert was London born, on 18th March 1916, in Walthamstow. He started as an amateur with Leyton before, in May 1935, joining Tottenham and he gained an Essex FA senior cap as he appeared at least six times for the county. “Darky” as he was nicknamed signed as a professional in January 1936 and it was twelve months later that he made his League debut at centre half against Newcastle United.
When the war started he guested for West Ham United, Bradford City, Crystal Palace, Lincoln City as well as Accies. Said to have given a sound display in his only outing for the club, not afraid to go forward as a sixth attacker. He was attached to the Cameronians (Scottish Rifles), and was stationed briefly at Hamilton.
The war over he played only with the reserves at White Hart Lane until he was signed by Southern League side, Colchester United in the summer of 1947. He later played for Chelmsford. Born in Walthamstow on 18th March 1916. At the age of 78, he died in West London on 10th January 1995.
