WATSON, Philip (1907)
Overview
Father of Phil, he was Dykehead born and bred, seeing the first light of day on April 29th 1881. Played for Shotts Hawthorn and as a senior with Dykehead prior to a move which saw him go to Celtic Park where his stay was restricted to 3 League appearances. He returned to his local side on loan in 1903, then in October that year he went to Ayr FC, returning on loan on two occasions to Dykehead. A permanent move came in August 1906, then he joined Bathgate the following year. It was when he was approached by Accies that he made a name for himself following him putting pen to paper on 22nd July 1907.
A very useful defender he could perform well in any role though it was usually as a wing half or centre half that he appeared in the hoops. He was instrumental in Accies appearing in the 1911 Scottish Cup Final only to lose after a replay to Celtic. The start of that same season brought him a Lanarkshire Cup winners medal after it was decided that Accies and Wishaw Thistle should hold the cup jointly following two drawn matches in August 1910.
His move to Motherwell in 1912 was the subject of a protest by the Accies officials. His new club were censured by the Scottish League as a result of their actions as they were in breach of the rules. He later joined Dumbarton before once again signing for Motherwell in November 1914. He decided to hang up his boots in 1918. His death, at the age of 87, was intimated in 1946.
Debut on 15th August 1907 in a Scottish League match away to Celtic.
