BOYD, Jimmy (1941)
Overview
He was apparently a former Newcastle United player, if that was the case he may well have been Glasgow born, on 29th April 1907. Jimmy Boyd spent ten years on Tyneside from 1925 before going to Derby County for a £1,000 fee, then to Bury in January 1937. Dundee then brought him north nine months later. There he made his debut on 30th September away to Queen of the South.
A return to England came in June 1938 when he signed for Grimsby Town. A number of guest appearances were made during the war, amongst them were outings for Leyton Orient, Sunderland and Brighton.
He retired in March 1947 and coached in Sweden. His next appointment was a scout for Newcastle United in August 1949. A similar position was held later with Middlesborough.
He was capped for Scotland against Northern Ireland in season 1933-34. He won an FA Cup Winners medal in 1932. Said to be a penetrating winger who delivered accurate crosses and was also an accomplished scorer, during season 1931-32 he scored 23 goals from the right wing position.
The joker in the dressing room he had been in the Junior grade with Petershill and from there he joined St Bernard’s in October 1924 before going to St James’ Park. Jimmy later became a Physical Education instructor. He went on to become a first class bowler and represented England at the sport. He was a month short of his eighty fourth birthday when he died at Bournemouth on 22nd March 1991.
