DUNCANSON, Jimmy (1941)

Overview

Jimmy was born in Glasgow on 13th October 1919. He played in the junior grade with Dunoon Milton Rovers and it was from there in July 1938 that he signed for Rangers. He was part of a deal which saw him come to Hamilton from Rangers on loan in December 1941, with Morton Dempster going to Ibrox in return. He was a hard grafter and had an eye for a goal, a feature of his short stay at Douglas Park. When he returned to Rangers he soon made a himself a regular in the side.

During the war years he received two “unofficial” caps and then in 1947 he was honoured in a match against Ireland. Scottish League selectors used him on a single outing. His goalscoring feats were all appreciated by the Rangers supporters, he seemed to have the knack of scoring at the time when most needed. He was another player to collect three consecutive Scottish Cup Winners medals in 1948, 1949 and 1950. His other hauls included three League winners and two League Cup gongs. Remembered in the Rangers annals as the first player to score a hat trick against Celtic in the 20th Century, on January 1st 1949 in a 4-0 win. In his time at Ibrox he netted 147 times in 302 appearances, very impressive for a player who frequently played on the left wing rather than his favoured inside left role.

In November 1950 he travelled along Paisley Road West to turn out for St Mirren and there he stayed until the close season of 1953. He then turned to a lower level with Stranraer who were building a side to compete at last in the Scottish League proper. He finally retired in 1955.

He was 5’10” and tipped the scales at a couple of pounds over 11sts. Jimmy died in Glasgow on 1st September 1996.
