COWAN, Sandy (1899)
Overview
In his day said to be one of the finest half backs who ever graced a football pitch. Joined the club from Cameronians. Sandy appeared in every Lanarkshire Cup Final with the club from 1901 until 1904, however he was only once on the winning side, in 1902.
He was a member of the Accies side which clinched the Second Division Championship away to Clyde on 6th February 1904. He was appearing for Abercorn in 1906 along with other two ex Accies, Darroch and John Curran. Arthurlie had signed a player named Cowan from Abercorn for the start of season 1906-07.
Later that season he returned to Douglas Park to assist Accies in their run in he Qualifying Cup when the club had to provide two teams on the same day on three occasions. Such was his fondness for the old club. He was the first man to clock up a century of Scottish League appearances for the club. The vast majority of his outings were in what used to be the left half position, though he also turned if needed at the back also. One of the early heroes of the burgh.
It was noted in the press in 1923 that he had “died some time ago following a long and trying illness”.
