Overview
John was born in Motherwell, he was a 19 year old when signed from Cambuslang Rangers, having been with Wishaw Rangers earlier. Played in a trial for the Scottish League at Firhill in Feb 1910.
A month later he was transferred to Bradford Park Avenue with whom he appeared in 247 matches before and after the First World War, finding the net on 21 occasions. He was a member of the side which won promotion to the English First Division in season 1913-14, but when he left them they had been relegated in season 1920-21.
A fee of £750 was paid to take him from Bradford to Manchester United in June 1921. In his only season at Old Trafford he found himself in a relegated side once again and he returned to Scotland to play for St Mirren in July 1922.
Like a number of others he went across the Atlantic and sampled American football with New York Giants. He was awarded the Military Medal while a sergeant. He played for Accies again during the First World War, on 23rd February 1918 against Falkirk at Brockville, as the English League clubs did not play at that time. He was a left half and a very popular lad with the Accies supporters.
Debut on 5th December 1908 in a Scottish League match away to Kilmarnock which was abandoned.
