Overview
One of the finest goalscorers in Scotland in the post-war years. From the time he made his first appearance for Albion Rovers on 6th January 1973, until his last outing as a sub for Stirling Albion on 12th December 1993, he played in 549 League games with 233 goals in that period.
For Accies he was a big hero when he scored twenty-three times in the title winning season, 1985-86. He was the First Division Player of the Year and the Supporters Club Player of the Year also that year. Came from Hibernian for a fee of £8000.
He had begun his career with Toll Star before he turned junior with Blantyre Celtic. Played a trial for Kilmarnock before signing for Albion Rovers. They later accepted an offer of £15,000 from St Johnstone where he went on to become their all time top scorer with 140 League and Cup goals in 277 + 9 outings. John also had a brief spell with Ayr United before joining Hibernian.
When Accies were relegated from the Premier League in 1987 he moved once more, this time to Stirling Albion where he continued to knock in the goals. He then went on to become their Manager and led them to the Second Division title in 1991. He next made the move to Arbroath to take over the reins as boss, a job he left in 1996.
By July 1998 he was assistant to Martin Clark with Armadale Thistle. A year later the pair of them were in charge at Castle Park with Blantyre Victoria. He later managed East Kilbride Thistle. In October, 2008 he was working with Yoker Athletic. John was another who played in the Semi-Professional tournament of the late seventies and early eighties against England, Holland and Italy. A Hamilton man, so his efforts for Accies were appreciated all the more by the supporters.
Born in Hamilton on 9th March 1954.
Debut on 29th December 1984 in a Scottish League match at home to Ayr United which Accies won 3-1.
