ARMES, Sammy (1943)

Overview

Born at New Seaham, in the Sunderland district, on 30th March 1908, Sammy was an outside left during long his career which commenced with Howden FC, he next played for Dawdon Colliery. He turned professional in May 1930 with Carlisle United. One report of the day called him “a sprinter marksman”.

He moved to Chester in June 1932 and in three successive matches for them he scored nine goals during season 1933-34. Blackpool obtained his signature in January 1934, only to farm him out to Wigan. Leeds United resurrected his career but had to pay a fee to both Wigan and Blackpool before he could move to Elland Road, this was in October 1935. At that time his measurements were given as 5’10” and 10sts 4lbs. While in Yorkshire he played in 82 League and Cup games and scored 9 nine times. By February 1939 he was on his way to Middlesborough who released him in August 1946 with the war over.

It was during the period of war that he appeared briefly as a Hamilton player in 1943, he also appeared with Luton Town during the war. His death occurred on 27th August 1958 in Sunderland at a relatively young age.

Debut on 21st August 1943 in a Southern League fixture away to Partick Thistle.
