McKERRELL, Danny (1936)

Overview

Danny was a prominent member of the Bedlay Juniors side in 1935 and he was chosen to play against the Irish Free State in Dublin that year. It was felt that he would soon be joining the senior ranks, therefore it came as a surprise when he moved to another junior club, Shawfield Juniors in the 1935 close season.

Blantyre born, he was signed by Accies in 1937 and in the two League matches he appeared in he netted twice. Given a free transfer by Accies in April 1937.

He was then signed by Falkirk before a shock move took him to Methil two days before the Fifers were due to play their twice replayed Scottish Cup Semi Final tie against St Bernard’s on 13th April 1938 at Tynecastle when he scored the winning goal. He went on to collect a Cup Winners medal later that month after scoring twice in the 4-2 win. He then returned to Falkirk. On December 9th 1938, he rejoined East Fife from Falkirk.

While registered with East Fife in war time he returned to play for Accies in 1939. For a time he was billeted in North East England while with the RAF and he appeared in 2 matches for Newcastle United and also turned out in Middlesborough’s colours that season, 1941-42. Carlisle United too, used him.

He was an outside left who weighed 10 stones and was 5’6” tall.

He was acting as coach to Blantyre Victoria in February 1950.

Debut on 24th August 1936 in a Lanarkshire Cup tie away to Airdrieonians.
