PROUDFOOT, John (1904)

Overview

When Harry McIlvenny decided to leave Hamilton in search of pastures new after Accies triumph in the Second Division title race of 1903-04, the need for a new centre forward was paramount. In the previous nine League matches until this fellow arrived the wearer of the number 9 jersey had scored only one goal. When this lad managed to get two on his debut, things looked good and they were when the undernoted details are examined.

Despite that when the following season came round he had gone from Douglas Park and the former centre, McIlvenny was back. In the 1906 Lanarkshire Cup Final he netted twice in Accies 3-0 win over Dykehead. He was a former Partick Thistle player, having been with them for season 1903-04 at least. An unusual piece of information has been made available in that when he was at Firhill he was paid £1-10/- (£1.50p) per week and when he left to join Accies the Firhill club continued to pay him 5/- (25p) per week until the end of the season. A resident of Whiteinch.

Debut on 5th November 1904 in a Scottish League match at home to Abercorn in which he scored twice.
