BURNS, Obie (1943)
Overview
A Larkhall man, he went to Queen of the South in 1935 from Royal Albert before in 1938 joining Airdrieonians. At the outbreak of war he was a Burnley player and in the 1939-1940 season he returned to play with Royal Albert in the Junior grade, a condition imposed by the English side was that he should be insured for £1000, and this the Larkhall club arranged.
The following term he assisted Burnbank Athletic as the Albert had closed down. At that time he was serving with The Cameronian (Scottish Rifles), “somewhere in Lanarkshire”. Sunderland and Halifax Town also used his services in war-time.
He appeared for Hamilton from 1943. Oliver was a decided asset to Accies at that time, he often took over the role of chief provider of chances when Alex Herd was not able to appear. The two of them together were a terrific inside forward duo. Latterly he was the main penalty kick taker at Douglas Park.
He returned to the Lancashire club in June 1945. During his war service he was stationed near Perth and he was loaned to St Johnstone for season 1945-46 when he made 19 League appearances and scored 8 goals for them.
Debut on 20th November 1943 in a Southern League match away to Heart of Midlothian.
