McNEIL, Willie (1936)

Overview

Like his father, Bobby, he was a winger, though Willie played more often on the right, though in his first few matches for Accies he appeared at inside right. Joined the club as an amateur in 1936.

His first appearance in Accies colours was in a Scottish Alliance match against Galston in March 1934 when he scored twice. He was with Cambuslang Rangers prior to him coming to Hamilton. An enquiry was received from Dundee about him in July 1938, however Accies did not quote a figure to them as they had asked.

He won the club golf competition at Carnwath Golf Club in 1939. Willie appeared with Alloa Athletic as a war time guest player.

Fair haired, he was a Flying Officer in the RAF. Attached to the Air Rescue Service. He resided in Arran and his death took place there in February 2001 at the age of 87 at Whiting Bay.

Debut on 26th September 1936 in a Scottish League match at home to Third Lanark.
