Sandy was a former Cadzow Guild player, he came from Ferniegair and was soon in the junior ranks with Larkhall Thistle where his cool play at full back earned him 2 Junior International caps. It was in January 1921 that he was signed by Secretary Stanley Baxter for Accies. By 1923 he was the team captain for the Accies eleven.

The Lanarkshire Cup Final of 1924 brought him his only winners medal in the competition when Royal Albert were beaten 3-0 at Douglas Park. He could play in either of the full back positions and once turned out in the goalkeeper’s jersey when no one else was available with regular ‘keeper, George Sommerville injured. An excellent servant to the club, he had good positional sense and was quick about the field of play.

Moved to Heart of Midlothian on a temporary transfer in January 1925. In February 1926 he went to Dumbarton also on a temporary transfer, within a month he was back in Accies first team.

He was transferred to Motherwell in an exchange deal with Frank Wilson coming to Douglas Park in August 1928. Sandy went on to perform at the highest level with the Fir Park club and he was a member of the side which met Celtic in the Final of the Scottish Cup in 1931 and following that he went to South Africa with Motherwell on tour.

He was again on the move in January 1932 when he appeared with Bo’ness in the Scottish Cup. The commencement of the new season saw him appear in Accies reserve eleven and with the first team hit by injury he once more played for the top side later in the campaign.

When it was suggested in 1945 that something should be done to develop sport in Lanarkshire amongst the young, Sandy was one of three former Accies who were elected to the panel of experts. Bobby Reid and Bobby Wallace being the others. His father-in-law was former trainer of the Accies, John Hindle.

Not the tallest of players at 5’6” but his tenacity and his build of 11sts 7lbs were two of his main assets.

Debut on 23rd February 1921 away to Hibernian which Accies won 1-0.
