Johnny was the old style ball playing winger. He was attending Calder Street Secondary School in Blantyre when he was chosen to play in the Scottish Schoolboys under 14 side which met Wales at Douglas Park on 7th May, 1938.

From Blantyre Accies he signed for Queen's Park. He then went on to sign for Hibernian and while on the books at Easter Road, he played against Rangers in the 1946 Victory Cup Final and was Hibs scorer in their 3-1 defeat.

He then transferred to Motherwell in 1949 and his sparkling wing play earned him Inter League caps in 1951 and 1952. During these same years he appeared in the Scottish Cup Final, as a loser in '51, and as a winner the following year.
