McGURK, Jimmy (1937)

Overview

Appeared with the quaintly named minor side, Larkhall Anchor of Hope, as a youth. Represented the Scottish League against the English League in October 1941 at Blackpool in front of a 20,000 crowd. The Scots were defeated 3-2. Jimmy was one of three players who turned out for the club before and after the Second World War.

From Netherburn, he was signed in 1937 from Stonehouse Violet where he had only played a few times, having been with Coalburn Juniors previously, with whom he had collected a Hozier Cup Winners medal in May 1936. As a junior he often played up front but it was as a full blooded full back that he is best remembered by the Accies faithful.

In September 1938 Aberdeen asked about him and were told that the fee to take him north would be £3,000. At the end of season 1943-44 he went on loan to Celtic. Two years later Motherwell used him also. His partnerships with Matt Devine and later Jocky Johnstone are legend in Hamilton.

In retirement he was greenkeeper at Dalserf Bowling Club in Ashgill, where he resided at the time of his death in July 1999.

Debut on 18th September 1937 in a Scottish League match away to Third Lanark.
