HOWE, Bobby (1927)
Overview
Bobby saw the first light of day in Dumbarton on 3rd August 1903. He played in Lanarkshire with Shotts United before going to Petershill Juniors. Came to Accies in the 1927 close season. Reports of his debut stated that he improved as the game went on, indeed as the season went on he was one of the clubs star men. His position was on the left wing though later in his career he switched to the opposite flank when needed.
Taller than the average winger at 5’8”, that and his 11sts 6lbs frame were a distinct benefit to him and allowed him the freedom that lesser built players sought. He was an above average goalscorer for someone in his position, in fact in seasons 1928-29 and 1929-30, from his 73 League matches he found the net no less than 43 times.
By 1932 he had joined Heart of Midlothian following his brilliant displays for Accies which had caught the eye of the Scottish team selectors and Bobby was capped against Holland and Norway during a tour abroad by the Scotland team. His time at Tynecastle lasted no more than a season and once again he was on the move this time Third Lanark in 1933. While at Cathkin he was a member of Thirds losing Scottish Cup Final team in 1936. The previous year the Cathkin club were Second Division Champions and Bobby played his part in that success.
Yet another transfer took him to St Johnstone for a year's campaign before finally signing for Dundee United in August 1938. He was Secretary with Petershill after the Second World War.
He was the first ever Accies player to capped in an official International match for Scotland. (Willie McNamee had been selected to play for Scotland during World War One, classed as unofficial).
At the age of 75, Bobby died on 20th June 1979.
