BAIRD, Walter (1936)

Overview

While at Beckford Street School he was capped for Scotland against England, Wales and Ireland at Under 14 level in 1927. He appeared as a juvenile with a Larkhall side, then joined Lesmahagow Juniors. Provisionally signed by Partick Thistle only to be released by them whereupon he moved to Royal Albert. His next move was the short hop across Raploch Street to Larkhall Thistle and while there he was converted from a half back to a full back.

Bought by Accies from Sheffield Wednesday for a fee of £125 in August 1935. He was paid £20 with a wage of £4 per week plus another £1 while in the first team. As can be seen from the details below he didn’t mange a fiver very often!

He played on loan with Royal Albert in the Scottish Qualifying Cup shortly after joining Accies against Larbert Amateurs in a 1-1 draw at Larkhall. Freed at the close of the 1935-36 season. Morton then took him to Cappielow along with another former Hamilton full back, John Dewar. Reported to have been signed by Doncaster Rovers in 1936. He retired at the close of the 1936-37 season. His death took place in 1958. Gourock born.

Debut on 4th April 1936 in a Scottish League match at home to St Johnstone.
