Clyde 2 Accies 1: Saturday 25 September 1999

Accies lost 2-1 at Broadwood today to a Clyde team which, rather unfairly, featured 12 men including referee Eric Martindale.

Accies were hampered by the absence of Gordon Hunter, who had been injured in last week's win over Partick Thistle. This meant that Steven Thomson returned to the back 4, with Ryan Kelly coming into the midfield. This was to prove to be absolutely crucial, as the inexperienced Accies midfield were continually outfought by the experienced former juniors in the Clyde team

However, this was not to prevent Accies taking the lead after only 5 minutes, when Nicky Henderson ran on to a poor passback and slipped the ball past the outrushing goalkeeper. Clyde equalised 5 minutes before half time when their centre forward headed home well from a cross from their left.

Before that goal Accies had missed a great chance through Eddie Cunnington and had clearly been the better team. It was, however, infuriating to watch Eric Martindale make a series of dubious decisions in Clyde's favour. The worst one was just after half time, when Steven Thomson was obviously pushed in the penalty box.

However, it became obvious towards the end that Clyde would eventually score from one of their many corners. Chris Reid appeared to be slow to jump for the ball and Clyde's agricultural centre half Spittal barged the ball home.
