OAKES, Jacky (1942)

Overview

Jacky was a Hamilton lad, where he first saw the light of day on 6th December 1919. A large chunk of his career was spent with Queen of the South.

When he enlisted he played for his unit side in the south of England and in 1941 they won their District Cup, he was their leading scorer playing at centre forward.

In 1944, while with Heart of Midlothian, he was chosen as a member of the Scottish party who were to play in Belgium on 6th and 7th January 1945. In fact he played in his usual jersey, on the left wing, in the first match when he laid on the first goal in a 3-2 win for a Scottish Services XI in front of a 15,000 crowd. He was not chosen for the other game. He also appeared for a Scottish Command XI at Easter Road against Hibernian on May 5th 1945. A member of the Royal Air Force at that period.

He played in England with Wolverhampton Wanderers and Huddersfield Town before the outbreak of war. He turned out for Queen of the South when peace returned and then in February 1947 he signed for Blackburn Rovers and he spent a season with them before Manchester City sought his signature in June 1948 and there he appeared on 77 occasions for the Light Blues. He returned to Dumfries in 1951 and played there until the early 1960’s. He was appointed part-time trainer/coach to Queens in 1964. When on song he was as good as any outside left in the country.

Debut on 14th November 1942 in a Southern League match at home to St Mirren.
