WOOD, Arthur (1922)

Overview

A 33 year old who had been on Gillingham’s payroll prior to his move to Hamilton in 1922. He was a centre forward who was reported to have a powerful and accurate shot. He had been in the minor grades in the Southampton area. He was born there on May 8th 1890 and played with St Mary’s Athletic then East Leigh Athletic until he joined Fulham in season 1911-12.

Following the First World War he went to Gillingham for three seasons, in his first his 12 goals helped them to go from the Southern League to the English League proper the next season. When he left Douglas Park he was signed by Newport County in 1923. When season 1924-24 opened he was with Queen’s Park Rangers. He was in his 87th year when he died at Merton on 17th January 1977.

5’9” in height and weighed 12sts.

Debut against St Mirren on 15th August 1922 in a 2-1 loss.
