CRAWLEY, Tom (1932)

Overview

A big bustling centre forward, 5’9” and 11sts 7lbs., who came to the club from Blantyre Victoria in November 1932 following an injury to Davie Wilson and he made quite an impact with a double on his debut, then a hat trick the next week. In fact he scored 11 goals in his first 8 games. He was a regular scorer and when Davie Wilson was able to return to the side, Tom often wore the number 9 shirt with Wilson at number 10 and vice versa. There was much discussion among the fans as to which of them was the better player, both had their supporters.

Eventually he moved on as Wilson regained the centre forward spot and Tom joined Motherwell in February 1934 for what was believed to be a fee of £1,000. A year later he again moved, this time to Preston North End. On being released by the Deepdale club he appeared for Accies once again in the Final of the Roseberry Cup at Tynecastle versus Heart of Midlothian and scored in a 5-2 loss, replacing the absent Davie Wilson who was with the SFA touring party in Canada.

Tom’s final club was Coventry City where he appeared mainly in the second eleven. In season 1935-36 he wore the number 9 jersey in the two legged Final of the Third Division Southern Cup which Coventry. He took a step back to centre half where he prolonged his career. During a war time match he scored 8 goals in a match against West Bromwich Albion, and during this period he guested for Nottingham Forest and Leicester City. While with Coventry he won a Division 3 (South) Cup Winners Medal in 1935-36.

Born in Blantyre on 10th November 1911, he died in 1977.
