HUNTER, Willie (1911)

Overview

Born at Springside, near Kilmarnock, Willie was a vastly experienced campaigner when he was signed by Accies in their efforts to win the Scottish Cup in 1911. Young William Miller had been played at centre forward up to the final, with some success it must be said however it was felt that his lack of big time football would be against him and the Directors brought in Willie to take his place in the Final.

As can be judged from the statistics below, it wasn’t a good move and he was released at the close of the season to be signed by Airdrieonians. His senior career had begun with Edinburgh amateurs, St Bernard’s in May 1904, then on to Broomfield in September 1905 as a professional. On loan to Kilmarnock in 1908 he score six times in his eight outings. with a hat trick in his final match for them.

June 1909 came with a move to Ibrox and it was from there in 1911 he came to Douglas Park. On leaving Airdrieonians he turned to Lochgelly in July 1912, then Cowdenbeath a year onwards. Reckoned on his day to be a first class centre forward. He appeared for the Scottish League against their Irish counterparts in 1909. A schoolteacher by profession.

Debut on 1st April 1911 in a Scottish League match away to Falkirk.
