1876/77

Overview

This season marked an important landmark in the club’s growth. On 9th September 1876 it was reported that it had been admitted to the Scottish Football Association.

However, there is some confusion regarding the club’s initial season in the Scottish Cup competition now that it was a member and eligible to participate. One record shows that at Bent Farm, visitors, Barrhead won by 3-0, another gives the score as 4-0. In the next round played on 21st October, according to Dave Breedon’s book of Scottish Records, Barrhead defeated Airdrie by 4-0, while Hamilton A won 2-1 at home to Dunfermline. The following month there was a 0-0 draw with Busby which was also said to a Scottish Cup tie. The replay took place the following week according the same source and as a draw again ensued, both teams moved to the next round where Lancefield were victors by 2-0 over Hamilton, without the A. The strange thing is that the Academical side which drew with Busby 0-0 was a listed recognised eleven.

Over the years the club appeared in many benefit matches and the first such known was played against Stonelaw on 21st April 1877 for the benefit of the West of Scotland Home for Incurables. Four days later “Cricket” was dropped from the club’s title.
