Accies 0, St Mirren 0: Saturday, 29 August 1998

Accies today dropped two valuable points at home to a very poor St Mirren team. To be perfectly honest, there wasn't an awful lot to be excited about. In the first half, the highlight was a back post header by Eddie Cunnington, which actually hit the bar twice before being cleared. A similar incident happened in the second half, where Cunnington again had a great shot which hit the bar with goalie nowhere. From the rebound, Michael Geraghty and a defender went for the ball and it hit the bar again!

Throughout the game, Accies had the bulk of the possession without really looking like scoring. Geraghty and Wales up front were particularly good and Nicky Henderson was the best midfielder on show. At the back the three central defenders, Hillcoat, Berry and Thomson coped comfortably with the St Mirren attacks on the break. Ian McFarlane made a superb save from one of Tony Fitzpatrick's talented youngsters in the first half but was otherwise quite relaxed. Once again, Tommy Tait and Ian McAulay looked to be out of their depth at this level. We need more from the midfield as we have a couple of excellent strikers up front.

The comedy highlight of the game was provided by the sending off of Tom Brown midway through the second half. He was penalised for offside and obviously made a dissenting remark to referee Bobby Orr. He was booked for this and clearly said something else stupid and was promptly sent off. Accies failed to capitalise on the extra man despite long spells when they were camped on the St Mirren 18 yard line.

The team was as follows :

McFarlane, Renicks, Cunnington, Hillcoat, Berry (McFarlane), Thomson, McAulay, Tait, Geraghty, Wales and N Henderson.
