Alex came to Accies from Partick Thistle, he could play either on the wing or as a centre forward. He had also been with Rangers and St Johnstone. He hailed from Stonehouse.

On being freed in 1928 by Accies he was signed on 24th July that year by Queen of the South. Alex had been with Solway Star also and it was from there that he had gone to Rangers for the sum of £150 at the close of season 1923-24 and was one of the Accies players who had guested for the Annan club earlier in 1928 in the Southern Counties Cup competition. Almost 20 years later he was coaching a Hamilton amateur club.
