Accies Career

Overview

As a schoolboy at Larkhall Academy, Billy showed considerable promise and he was capped at that level. Along with Tommy McLean he played with Birkenshaw Amateurs, one of the top teams in that grade at that time. His displays brought the senior scouts to see him and he decided to join Kilmarnock, who at that time was one of the most prominent teams in Scotland. This was in October 1962.

While at Rugby Park he was selected on five occasions to play for Scotland, this was in addition to the honours received at Youth and Amateur level. The latter honours were two in number and were acquired in season 1963-64. Billy could play in either of the full back positions; he distributed the ball well and this was put to good use in a fine Kilmarnock side of the time.

In 1974 he returned to Lanarkshire where he teamed up with Motherwell. Not long afterwards he turned to coaching with Ayr United. He was encouraged to come back to the playing side in 1977 and he came to Douglas Park, but it was a forlorn effort as his appearance in so few games testifies.

He was a commercial traveller in the tobacco industry when he retired, and he later took up residence on the Ayrshire coast.

Born in Larkhall on 8th April 1945.

Debut on 13th August 1977 in a Scottish League match at home to St Johnstone which Accies lost 1-0.
