SOMMERVILLE, George (1921)

Overview

Signed as understudy to Willie White in 1921 from Strathclyde. While keeping goal for Accies reserve side he was chosen to represent the Alliance League, Western Division in a match versus the Eastern Division in February 1922. As a schoolboy he played for Lanarkshire at outside right. A member of the side which won the Lanarkshire Cup for Accies in 1924 in the Final played at Douglas Park with Royal Albert the other Finalists.

He left Accies on 28th July 1926 to join Burnley. At first he did not accept their terms, however after further discussion he joined former team mate, John Steel, at Turf Moor. That was maybe not such a big surprise as they were married to sisters.

George moved on to Bristol City where he remained until he was given a free transfer in 1934. Another move took him to Barrow for a season and then he returned to the south of England to sign for Yeovil and Petters United.

He was a first class goalkeeper while at Douglas Park and a number of keepers were tried as replacement before one did come along. One of his hobbies was playing the ukulele.
