MILLER, Adam (1910)

OverviewSelected to play for Lanarkshire Juniors versus the Irish League in Belfast in 1909 while with Larkhall United and he was signed from there in October 1910.

Represented the Larkhall Players v the Lanarkshire Players at DP on 30th April 1912 along with brother William. Chosen as reserve left back for the Scottish League game against the Southern League at Cathkin Park on 13th November 1913. A similar distinction for the game against the English League at Celtic Park on 20th March 1915. He also appeared in a Lanarkshire Select side which met an eleven from Glasgow at Fir Park on 27th May 1916.

In August 1916, he rather surprisingly signed for Royal Albert, however within 2 months he was back with Accies. In February 1920 he was loaned to St Mirren to turn out for them in a Scottish Cup match against Raith Rovers. When the new season opened he moved to Love Street on a permanent basis.

With the advent of the new Second Division, many clubs were looking for experienced players and Johnstone were one such side and he moved there in February 1922.

He was one of the Accies all time greats, he appeared in the Scottish Cup Final less than six months after leaving junior football and his total of 256 League appearances while at Douglas Park stood as a record for many years and all but one of them was at left back, the other being as an experiment at centre half.

In 1931 he was alleged to be involved in a bribery scandal with another former player, Archie Kyle when together they had tried to get an Accies player to accept money to throw a match against Leith Athletic, which ironically Accies lost 3-2.

He was known locally as a first class bone setter and his services were much sought after. He was employed with the former Lanark County Council prior to his retirement.

Sturdily built at 5’8” and 11sts 4lbs.

Debut on 15th October 1910 in a Scottish League match away to Raith Rovers.
