KELLY, Dan (1924)

Overview

Signed from Blantyre Victoria in 1924 shortly after he had won a Lanarkshire Junior Cup medal with them in the final at Fir Park. Dan was an outside right and was a well built lad. He was tried at centre forward and in a Lanarkshire Express Cup tie at home to Motherwell in 1925 he scored a hat trick from that position.

Willie McAndrew introduced many new players during season 1926-27 and as a result others had to move on and Dan was one of the latter. When Derby County offered to take him he was transferred to them in January 1927. Like so many other he tried his luck in Ireland, where he turned out for Dundalk and such was his form for them that he was signed by Clapton Orient, this in 1935. Other clubs he played for were Doncaster Rovers, Torquay United and York City.

A popular figure while at Hamilton, Dan was a trier and gave 100% every time no matter in which position he was asked to play. At the time of his death in August 1941 he was employed as a barman in Glasgow, though he resided in Blantyre where he was a well respected member of the community.

Debut at home to St Johnstone on 16th August 1924 in a Scottish League game which was won 3-2.
