GARRETT, Archie (1907)

Overview

A Coalburn man, he joined Accies from Glenbuck Cherrypickers in 1907. He was given 11 outings until the end of the season and in that time he wore five different numbered jerseys, a real utility man.

His first sojourn at Douglas Park lasted two years then he went to Millwall. After another two years he was back on the scene at Hamilton when he played mostly at right back. It would seem that he worked on two year cycles because he again returned to the London club after that period. True to form he appeared yet again in red and white in 1915 as the Great War was in progress, the English Leagues being suspended as a result.

He was transferred to Vale of Leven in August of 1916. In 1918 he was appearing with Heart of Midlothian. Press reports of the day said that he was a strong and reliable member of the Accies set up, ever willing to play as required. Apparently had been with Blantyre Victoria at some time in his career.

His son, also called Archie played for Preston North End before returning north to sign for Heart of Midlothian in December 1938 for a £4,000 fee. In December 1950 at the age of 31 he retired in England having been with Northampton Town at that time.

Debut on 19th January 1907 in a Scottish League match at home to Falkirk in which he scored.
