BENSON, James (1951)

Overview

Dalbeattie born on 19th March 1925. His career started with local clubs, Granite City and Dalbeattie Star before he had a spell on the books of Carlisle United, from October 1945. Four years later he was at Rugby Park where he was in the side for 63 games. His fee for joining Killie was £20. While there he was on Tottenham’s radar but both he and the club were not keen as he was a local PE teacher.

In 1951 he shared Accies goalkeeping duties with George Taylor. His final game for the club was against Dunfermline Athletic, whom he signed for in August 1952, remaining with the Pars until May 1955.

He continued his teaching career on his retirement from playing and his other interests included badminton, yachting, cricket and golf. He always had an interest in the results concerning Arsenal while one of his heroes was Ted Ditchburn, the former Spurs and England goalkeeper.

Jimmy died in his home town on 6th November 2009.
