Accies Career
Overview
Tommy played with Birkenshaw Welfare Hearts before joining Larkhall Thistle in 1955. That same year he was approached by Partick Thistle and terms were agreed to take him to Firhill. On 5th December 1956 he played in a trial match for the Scottish Under 23 team at Brockville. He was an elusive left winger whose form enabled him to turn out for his country against the "Auld Enemy" at Hampden in 1958.
He was transferred to Aston Villa, the transfer fee was said to be £20,000, in February 1962. Two years later he was back at Firhill and then moved on to Morton in 1966. He came to Hamilton in 1967 from Morton, whom he had helped to gain promotion to the First Division. On his league debut for Accies he scored twice against Stranraer. Due to a recurring knee injury his games for Accies were few and he decided to retire at the season's close.
In 1970 he was offered the challenging job of managing Accies and this he accepted. During that time he drew on the jersey again to help out, this "career" was restricted to three games. As his public house flourished he gave up the Manager’s post due to pressure of business. By 1981, he was back in harness when he took over the helm at Stranraer after another former Accie, Gordon Hamilton, resigned as Manager there.
Tommy's haul of honours included two full caps, and two League Cup runners up medals, in 1957 and 1959, while at Firhill and a Second Division winners medal in his time at Cappielow.
