Accies Career

Overview

Without a doubt Mark was one of the best signing deals which John Lambie carried out while he was in charge at Douglas Park. When Graham Mitchell was transferred to Hibs in 1987, John returned to Easter Road to sign Mark, an out of favour central defender, for a fee of £15,000. He had played most of his games in the Premier League and he therefore knew what life was all about at the highest level in Scottish football, so it was quite a coup to get him to come to Hamilton. His experience was never more in evidence than in the often talked about Scottish Cup win at Ibrox in 1987.

Although the club were relegated at the end of the season there were high hopes of an early return to the top section with Mark still in the colours. Alas after only four games of the new term he announced that he was retiring to join the police force. This he did, and when promotion was achieved, many felt that had he still been at Hamilton, the next year in the Premier League would have told a different story.

A tall, fair haired defender, stronger on his left, he joined St Mirren from his local junior club, the Burgh, in 1977. While at Love Street he was capped at Under 21 level, while with Hibs he was in the losing squad for the 1986 League Cup final. He played with the police, and in 1990 he captained the Scotland side against England at Fir Park, scoring the only goal of the game. As a youngster at Johnstone High he had the honour of playing in the blue of Scotland on 3 occasions in 1977, versus Wales and England (twice).

Born in Johnstone on 16th September 1959.

Debut on 17th January 1987 in a Premier League match away to Rangers which Accies lost 2-0.
